A workshop titled “Identifying the Challenges and Opportunities of Green Employment in
the Tourism and Hospitality Sector” was held on Tuesday, 29 May 2025, at
2:00 PM in the Conference Room of Parjatan Bhaban, Dhaka.
The event was jointly organized by Aspire to
Innovate (a2i) and the Bangladesh Tourism Board, bringing together a diverse
group of stakeholders from the tourism and hospitality sector. The objective of
the workshop was to explore the concept of green employment and examine how it
can support the industry’s transition toward sustainable and environmentally
responsible practices.
Mr. Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber, CEO of the
Bangladesh Tourism Board, attended the event as the Chief Guest. In his
remarks, he highlighted the importance of adopting eco-friendly approaches in
tourism and emphasized that promoting green employment is essential for
achieving sustainable growth in the sector.
Among the notable contributors was Md. Abdul
Latif Mahmud, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Department of Tourism
and Hospitality Management at the World University of Bangladesh. Speaking
during the group discussions, Mr. Mahmud identified critical issues such as the
lack of green skills and environmental awareness within the industry, along
with the limited use of renewable energy. He stressed the need for
well-designed initiatives to enhance capacity and create meaningful green job
opportunities.
The workshop featured engaging group
discussions where participants—including academics, industry leaders,
policymakers, and development partners—collaborated to identify current
challenges, policy gaps, and actionable strategies to promote green employment.
The session concluded with a collective commitment to align Bangladesh’s
tourism and hospitality industry with the broader goals of sustainable
development.
