Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Thursday (3rd November-2011) urged the higher education providers to earnestly engage in the noble profession.

A mercenary attitude in the name of providing education for all through establishing private universities has to be changed, he added.

“We do not differentiate between private and public universities, as our children are studying in both institutions,” Nahid said.

The minister was addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony of World University of Bangladesh (WUB) at Gauripur, Ashulia under Savar upazila of the capital.

All universities have to focus on knowledge earning and research activities and maintain international standard, Nahid said.

He urged private sectors to come forward as most students are now studying in private institutions.

“I am very delighted that that the WUB is going to set up its permanent campus and hope that it will start functioning as soon as possible,” said the minister.

No private university would be able to run its activities violating the law related to it, Nahid warned.

If any university fails to comply with the rule of having permanent campus of its own and other regulations, it cannot offer admission to students following the ongoing session, the minister said.

He laid the foundation stone of WUB as the chief guest and also planted a tree on the campus premises.

In his speech, noted educationist Professor Dr Abdul Mannan Chowdhury said at present there are 6000 students studying in WUB.

Some 2200 students having graduated from the university are now engaged in jobs at home and abroad, Prof Mannan said.

“We are in the right track, as WUB has a philosophy that education is not only the backbone of a nation but utilitarian education is the last resort of a nation to attain quick emancipation,” he added.

WUB is a private university, created under the Private University Act, 1992 (amended in 1998) & approved by the Government of Bangladesh and the University Grants Commission.

On the new campus, two separate buildings (one six storey and another nine storey) will be built where at least 10,000 students can be accommodated by a whole range of classrooms, WUB sources said.

Besides, the university will have residential halls, laboratories, design studio, IT centre, gymnasium, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, auditorium, cinema hall and parking spaces.

Presided over by Prof Dr Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, the ceremony was addressed, among others, by Vice-Chancellor of WUB, Prof Dr M Nurul Islam, vice-chancellor of Mawlana Bhashani Science & Technology University, Bir Bikram Maj Gen (Rtd) Helal Morshed Khan, Chairman, Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council, Morsheda Chowdhury, chairman of Trustee board of WUB.
